In the third world country such as the Philippines, Windows OS is generally used Operating System (OS). The Linux OS is unkown to most of us, specially those who are not computer literate. These two operating systems had been compared since the birth of Linux.
Windows OS had been dominating the OS up to 1990s, but since the birth of Linux OS comparison of the two operating system became a common topic among computer enthusiasts. In 2003 a study conducted concluded that Linux is nearly equal to Windows XP.
Honestly, I have no idea what is Linux, I am common with the Windows OS specially Windows XP. According to the Websites I use for preferrence, Windows is the prominent operating system under the Proprietary software licenceswhile Linux is the most prominent operating system under Free Software licences. The two operating systems compete for user base in the personal computer market as well as the server market. Both operating systems are used in government offices, schools, business offices, homes, supercomputers, intranet and internet servers, and more.
In terms of cost, Linux is the winner against Windows. It is because Linux is a freeware while users must buy a registered Windows OS so as to use it legally.
In community and support, there are many paid local Windows techs. Fewer for Linux. Massive free community support for Linux.
For servers Linux has experienced rapid growth in the past few years. In the web server market, Linux owns a high percentage of usage (around 50%), taking into account statistics about web servers, in which Apache (used in Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD) is the leading web server software. Netcraft reported in September 2006 that eight of the ten most reliable internet hosting companies run Linux on their web servers.
For workstations, Linux is the predominant operating system for use in supercomputing, with over 75% of the top 500 published supercomputers using Linux, against no entries listed that specifically use Windows.
